Crazy Cabin Workshop

This variation on the log cabin quilt, based on the design concept of Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry, really caught my eye.  By twisting the rows you can make a “crazy cabin” quilt that is unique.  A focal fabric in the center of each of the 9 blocks gets you started on creating this fun project.  I chose to use Chinese proverb blocks that I had in my stash, but a motif fabric or graphic design would work nicely too.  We will be piecing on foundation but this is not a paper pieced project.
Please join me for what promises to be a fun and creative day!

BMQG GETAWAY 2021 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. What exactly is the Get-Away? Answer:  Consider it a “Cabin Fever Reliever” and a sewing retreat or immersion weekend rolled into one. Held at the Red Jacket Mt. View Resort in North Conway on March 19-21, 2020 with an extra sewing day on Thursday March 18th if desired.

  2. What is the “extra sewing day”? Answer: Many people have asked for an extra day of sewing so we are providing Thursday as a “sew on your own day.”  There is a lower room charge for Thursday night and meals are on your own until the actual Get-Away event begins at 5 pm Friday evening.  The ballroom is provided for those who wish to come early to sew starting at noon on Thursday. Cost for rooms on Thursday are $143 for singles, $72/person double and $55.00/person for triple room accommodations.  There are no quads available on Thursday night.

  3. What hours are available for sewing?  Answer: Starting at noon on Friday until you collapse or Thursday at noon if you opt for the extra day. (Your sleeping room might not be ready until mid-afternoon, though.) If you want to sew all night, you go for it! The sewing room is open as long as someone is in it.  Otherwise it is locked for security purposes so that you may leave your machines in the room.

  4. What is the challenge exhibit?  Answer: Each year at the close of the Get-Away weekend, a challenge is announced for the next year.  Anyone is eligible to participate in the challenge for ribbons and prizes whether you attended the previous year’s event or not.

  5. How do I find out the subject of the challenge?  Answer: Check out the November 2020 newsletter or the Guild Challenges page.  This year we will finally be voting on the 2020 challenge.

  6. Is it true that there are door prizes and raffles?  Answer:  Of course!  You can take chances on a terrific raffle basket full of quilt related goodies.  And don’t forget the GRAND PRIZE drawing for a free Get-Away weekend the following year for the winner’s half of a double room.

  7. How is the food at the Red Jacket Mt. View Resort?  Answer:  Let’s put it this way: no one has ever left feeling hungry.  The meals are great and the service is wonderful.  It’s a really great experience with no cooking and no cleanup!  And it’s all included in your room fee.

  8. Why would I want to try the quilting workshop?  Answer: Because it’s lots of fun to see the project evolve and you might even complete it during the weekend. Pam Horvath will  be teaching again this year.

  9. Why do I need to make out two checks to send in with the registration form?  Answer: One check covers the hospitality, workshops and possible supplies provided by BMQG.  The other check for the hotel is a room deposit and guarantees your room reservation.  You will pay the balance of your room bill at the time of checkout.  Remember that there is a 72-hour cancellation policy for individual room cancellations plus a $25.00 cancellation fee.  Send both checks to the designated address on the registration form: BMQG Get-Away, PO Box 6174, Laconia, NH 03247-6174

  10. Are there any other activities?  Answer: On Friday night there will be a Show and Tell of any quilt that you have made from past Get-Away workshops.  There is no time limit on when these were created. There is also a “Show and Tell” on Saturday evening showing what you’ve been working on during the weekend.  There will be NO chair massages this year.  And of course, there is always shopping in North Conway if you want to take a break from sewing.

  11. Is the hotel handicapped accessible? Answer: The hotel has bellhop service to assist you with hauling your belongings to your room and your sewing gear to the ballroom and workshop room. Of course, tips would be appreciated.

  12. What if it is cancelled? Answer: If the event is canceled by the Guild and hotel, your fees will be refunded.  If the event goes on & you cancel, you will forfeit your registration fee and owe the hotel $25 for your room cancelation cost.

  13. What has been changed due to Covid-19?  Answer: The ballroom has been secured as our lockable sewing room.  Each person will have their own 6’ table.  (There are plenty of electrical outlets, but it would make sense to bring a light, and perhaps an extension cord and power strip.)  The 10th Mountain room, which was used as our main sewing room in the past, will now be our workshop room.  (We can have 40 people in the ballroom and 16 in the workshop room.)
  • There will be no masseuse.  Masks will be highly encouraged, even if a person has been vaccinated by then.
  • The meals will be plated; no buffets.  You will be asked to select your food choices from a limited menu in early March.   (Can still have restrictive dietary preferences.)
  • Friday night appetizers are still a ‘go’ but the serving style could be different.
